چکیده

In the bin packing problem, a list L of n items is to be packed into a sequence of unit capacity bins with the goal of minimizing the number of bins used. First Fit (FF) is one of the most natural on-line algorithms for this problem, based on the simple rule that each successive item is packed into the rst bin of the sequence that currently has room for it. We present an average-case analysis of FF in the discrete uniform model: the item sizes are drawn independently and uniformly at random from the set f1=k; : : :; (k ?1)=kg, for some k > 1. Let W FF (L) denote the wasted space in the FF packing of L, i.e., the total space still available in the occupied bins. We prove that EW FF (L)] = O(p nk), i.e., there exists a constant c > 0 such that EW FF (L)] c p nk for all n; k suuciently large. By a complementary lower bound argument, we prove that this result is sharp, unless k is allowed to grow with n at a rate faster than n 1=3 , in which case EW FF (L)] = (n 2=3). Finally, we show that this last result carries over to the continuous uniform model, where item sizes are chosen uniformly from 0; 1]. The O(n 2=3) upper bound for the continuous model is new and solves a problem posed a decade ago. The proofs of many of these results require extensions to the theory of stochastic planar matching.

Security of Sponge structures

Sponge structure is a structure widely used in the design of cryptographic algorithms that reduces the design of the algorithms to the design of a permutation or pseudo-random function. The development of sponge-based algorithms and the selection of designs based on this structure in SHA3 and CAESAR competitions increase the need to examine its security against various types of attacks. In the ...

Sampling from social networks’s graph based on topological properties and bee colony algorithm

In recent years, the sampling problem in massive graphs of social networks has attracted much attention for fast analyzing a small and good sample instead of a huge network. Many algorithms have been proposed for sampling of social network’ graph. The purpose of these algorithms is to create a sample that is approximately similar to the original network’s graph in terms of properties such as de...

Using the statistical characteristics is one of the methods to justify the random nature of the ocean waves. Probability function are used to facilitate the studies of the random waves parameters, such as the surface and height and period of the waves. Since, the force of the ocean waves are the prevalent principal forces on the offshore structures, the assignment of the significant structural ...

STRUCTURAL RELIABILITY ASSESSMENT UTILIZING FOUR METAHEURISTIC ALGORITHMS

The failure probability of the structures is one of the challenging problems in structural engineering. To obtain the reliability index introduced by Hasofer and Lind, one needs to solve a nonlinear equality constrained optimization problem. In this study, four of the most recent metaheuristic algorithms are utilized for finding the design point and the failure probability of problems with cont...

A COMPARATIVE STUDY FOR THE OPTIMAL DESIGN OF STEEL STRUCTURES USING CSS AND ACSS ALGORITHMS

In this article, an Advanced Charged System Search (ACSS) algorithm is applied for the optimum design of steel structures. ACSS uses the idea of Opposition-based Learning and Levy flight to enhance the optimization abilities of the standard CSS. It also utilizes the information of the position of each charged particle in the subsequent search process to increase the convergence speed. The objec...
